So… I have decided to so something different in my homeschool this year! Surprise! (Okay, if you know me, you might not be so surprised.)
I decided to try The Weaver Curriculum® by Alpha & Omega Publications.
I am just beginning my journey so I decided to share a little bit about what I am doing for those who might be interested in the curriculum.
Why Weaver?
I decided to try Weaver for several reasons. First, for years I had only one school-aged child, the other two just tagged along. With my children now entering 6th, 3rd and 1st grade, I wanted a curriculum that would allow me to teach all three grade levels at once. This does that.
Second, I always wanted to try unit studies. I do believe it is a more comprehensive way of learning and that kids retain more when doing a unit study. This way I don’t have to create them myself as I have done in the past.
Third, the curriculum is heavily Bible-based. I believe that ” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). I thought this would be a perfect compliment to my philosophy of education.
Where I Started?
I started with getting Weaver The Basic Five:
“The Basic Five is a starter package for families who desire to begin using The Weaver Curriculum® for the first time. Save money when you purchase this comprehensive kit that includes Volume 1, Day by Day 1, Wisdom Words, Teaching Tips & Techniques, and Skills Evaluation, plus a free Teacher’s Friend. “

I also purchased the Early Readers, Spelling and Penmanship to Praise books for each grade level.
What am I doing now?
Currently I am reading through the Teaching Tips & Techniques. It has really been great. I was a little slow in the beginning but I started setting my timer to 15-30 minutes each day and now that I am getting into it I found that it gives VALUABLE information for ANY home educator NO MATTER what curriculum you choose.
In some of my next posts I will share with you what I’ve been learning.
